What will the weather be like? How much daylight
will you have and what type of clothing should you pack for the trip? Since
Alaska is 2.3 times the size of Texas, it has a variety of climates and even the
hours of daylight differ from one part of the state to another. You can
see this in detail in the table below. There is no classic
"rainy season" in Alaska. The Southeast part of the state - along
the Inside Passage, normally gets the most rainfall and the Interior of Alaska -
(Homer, Seward, Anchorage, Denali, Fairbanks), typically has more of the warm
summer sunny days.
What to wear? Alaska is a very casual place so plan to dress in
layers and bring slacks, jeans, a hat, sweaters, sweatshirts, long sleeve and
short sleeve T-shirts, good walking shoes, a rain jacket and a coat if you are
planning to be in the Arctic or on the water (it is normally 10 degrees cooler
on the water than on land). The normal rule of thumb is to dress for one
season earlier than the one you are planning to travel in - as summertime in
Alaska is much like spring in the lower latitudes. The main thing is to be
prepared as the weather can change quickly and dramatically during the course of
these long summer days. Dressing in layers is the key - as you can simply
shed your outerwear as the day warms up or the weather changes.
