north to Nome:

One Day or Overnight Guided Journey By Air To Alaska's remote Bering Sea Coast and the Frontier Town of Nome.  Surrounded by treeless arctic tundra, Nome is a remote frontier town - 539 miles northwest of Anchorage and just 165 miles from the coast of Siberia.  Founded as a mining camp back in 1898 with the discovery of gold, over 20,000 hopeful prospectors flooded into Nome, creating massive tent cities on the beaches, before spreading out over the Seward Peninsula in search of elusive pay dirt. Those wild days are thankfully gone, and Nome is a friendly place now world famous as the dramatic finish line of the 1049 mile Iditarod Dog Sled Race, held annually every March.   Several long gravel roads lead out from Nome into the Seward Peninsula, and over 180 species of birds are seen here.   In the summertime the tundra can be quite beautiful.  Your trip to Nome will feature the area's very colorful Gold Rush history, adventures of the dog sledding culture and you'll even have a chance to pan for gold!  Offered May 20- Sept. 8, 2006.

Tour Summary:

• Fly from Fairbanks to Coldfoot, north of the Arctic Circle. The flight will provide an aerial view of the vast Alaska wilderness.
• Explore the region on your own or participate in one or more optional tours available in Coldfoot.
• Overnight at rustic Coldfoot.
• Ground tour south on the rugged Dalton Highway.
• Cross over the Arctic Circle in ceremonious fashion and receive an official Arctic Circle Adventure Certificate.
• Explore up close the amazing arctic tundra and feel the veins of ice just beneath the surface.
• Experience the mighty Yukon River. Marvel at the majestic beauty of the northland's most famous waterway and learn of the river's storied past.
• View the remarkable Trans Alaska Pipeline.
• Visit the Arctic Circle Trading Post situated in the rural community of Joy, Alaska.
• Return to Fairbanks under the light of the Midnight Sun.
• Departs 1:00 pm on Day 1; returns 12:00 - 1:00 am on Day 2.
