Imagine yourself on a day cruise in Prince William Sound.  Your boat pulls close to a spectacular tidewater glacier and you witness the sight and sound of thundering ice bergs splitting, cracking and then crashing into the sea.  These new ice bergs are often a beautiful deep blue (as they absorb all the color spectrums of visible light, except blue which they transmit) and they form fantastic shapes as they drift along with the currents.

Alaska has an estimated 100,000 glaciers covering 5% of the state's surface!   Located in a variety of locations throughout the state, these glaciers come in a variety of different types, including valley glaciers, mountain glaciers, cirque, hanging, piedmont and tidewater glaciers that flow to the ocean.   They form where more snow falls than melts. As the snow fall accumulates in higher mountain elevations over many years, an ice field will form, compact and actually flow slowly down the mountain slopes.  This is how glaciers are born.  Glaciers have left an impressive footprint on the Great Land, carving out steep topography and dramatic fjords and impacting human settlement and subsistence for thousands of years.

Below you'll find some great ways to experience glaciers, from land tours, kayaking tours, railroad excursions, popular glacier wildlife day cruises or by spectacular air excursions - some with glacier landings!
